Optima's NetStream Series now offers the ability to map IEEE802.1q VLANs to specific ports, making it possible to fully control the delivery of media streams and steer content to individual T:LAN ports. There are a total of four switched, auto-sensing 10BaseT/100BaseTX ports at the back of each NetStream unit. With the recent feature enhancements offered by the T:LAN OS Version 1.02.38A C2202, the administrator gains full control over the mapping of VLANs to each of the four Ethernet ports. How does it work? Mapping a VLAN to each of the available Ethernet ports is straightforward and can be completed within seconds. The interactive parameter entry process of the embedded T:LAN OS guides the administrator through the required steps. Traffic received by the CPE T:LAN Ethernet ports will be automatically tagged with the assigned IEEE802.1q VLAN tag and forwarded across the WAN to the router/switch located at the central/CO site. Likewise, traffic arriving from the central/CO side at the CPE unit will be switched to the assigned destination, untagged and then forwarded out the Ethernet port. All the T:LAN NetStream units can be administered through a separate Management VLAN. To provide robust and secure operation, the NetStream units will only accept management requests that originate from inside the carrier/provider network. Conclusion The VLAN Mapping feature set facilitates the extension of multiple VLANs right up to the network edge, significantly increasing the effectiveness of the security model. It also eases the management of customer VLANs by providing total end-to-end separation and control. Combine the VLAN Mapping with the recently introduced QoS Packet Classification and the T:LAN NetStream truly turns into the ideal tool to deliver prioritized mixed-media streams right to the doorstep of your customers - securely and efficiently. NOTE: All new T:LAN NetStream units (and all existing T:LAN NetStream units equipped with the enhanced switched Ethernet ports) support the VLAN Mapping functionality. You can identify these by checking the SYSTEM CHARACTERISTICS screen. If the display reads: LAN: 4e(10/100) then your unit is capable of supporting the VLAN Mapping functionality.
