Optima Remote Commander Server V1.12.0 Released

Optima is proud to announce the availability of the RCS (Remote Commander Server) V1.12.0  release.

This official March 2023 edition incorporates the following enhancements:

Support For High DPI Displays

Over the last few years high-DPI displays have become commonplace. These screens offer a much higher resolution (amount of pixels) to display the application contents. Unfortunately this also brought a whole slew of of challenges for existing applications. Programs designed in a pre-high-DPI era are usually unaware of the increased display scaling demands now placed on them.

Microsoft® Windows has a number of on-board tools to help with the transition but unless perfectly tuned, users complain that these result in anti-aliased, blurry output. Rather than producing the expected crisp graphics and text, the quality of the on-screen dialogs and icons seems decreased.

Coupled to this is the increasing disconnect between the physical and the logical scale of computer displays. Often laptop screens may feature 4K resolution in a much more compact form factor than a large desktop monitor, which despite its size, might not be able to display the same amount of pixels. Consequently, ensuring that the application content looks the same across multiple displays requires adaptive scaling support from Windows programs.

All of these challenges combined led to our decision to completely redesign the on-screen presentation of our Windows applications. First out of the gate was the Remote Commander Client V3.11.4, followed now by the Remote Commander Server V1.12.0.

Managing Pending Admin Changes

RCS supports cross-checking admin changes. Edits made by one admin will be flagged as pending until approved (cross-checked) by a second admin, thereby reducing the likelyhood of falsely granting resource access or accidentally/maliciously modifying credential scope without vetted approval.

Managing User And Resource Permissions

RCS supports granting granular permissions, allowing full control over which user has access to individual resources or features.

Managing Device Configuration Backups

RCS can be programmed to collect device configuration sets on a periodic basis. Collected data will be stored in a database, ready for extraction or restoral at a later time and date.

Managing EcoLOGIC Apps Log Data

RCS can be programmed to collate EcoLOGIC Apps Log Data from individual remote T:LAN drives, and replicate the drive contents in a central location. Once centrally stored, specific metrics can be correlated, combed through, filtered and harvested for further processing.

Importing Existing Users

RCS supports importing user records from LDAP directories to fast-track setting up new users.

Viewing Activity Logs

RCS can also export log/activity data for further processing. Multiple filter options and drill-down levels exist to customize the list view or exported data.

Windows Installer Based Deployment

Rolling out or updating software for use on corporate computers usually means that a number of strict IT department guidelines need to be followed. Nobody wants to execute repetitive, time consuming and error prone installations on individual machines, especially when a large number of systems are affected.

Instead, corporate applications can take advantage of the Microsoft Windows MSI format, specifically designed to be used by the Windows Installer. MSI installation procedures can be scripted or programmed to automate a number of different tasks, respect network topologies and follow role based installation guidelines. Thus they differ from the much simpler *.exe installers commonly shipping with consumer style applications.

MSI installers can also be used to repackage installation resources, even repair faults via a rollback feature. Current application versions may also be tracked via a database, thereby enabling automatic updates to apply the next version or latest changes. Remote Commander Server V1.12.0 ships as a Windows Installer MSI package.

Extended Validation (EV) Code Signing Certificates provide the standard benefits of digitally signed code plus a rigorous vetting process, so our users can have even greater confidence in the integrity of Optima’s applications. Digital signing easily identifies modified files. Signing shows our commitment to safety and safeguarding customer installations.

Meets Microsoft SmartScreen® Requirements

Microsoft SmartScreen uses information about the reputation of an application to warn users if the program isn’t well known and may be considered malicious. Starting with Microsoft Windows 8, applications with an EV code signing certificate have immediate reputation established.

Remote Commander Server V1.12.0 ships with an EV Code Signing Certificate to eliminate false alarms or warnings during the installation process.

Starting today, Optima Customer Service Program subscribers can download the RCS V1.12.0 from the Optima Cloud Storage system.
